San Antonians spend more than 45 minutes a day commuting to and from work. The 23.7 minutes each way is very close to the national average. It just seems longer in San Antonio because of obstacle-course road construction and stop-and-go bottlenecks.

But people can do so much more at home these days. They can shop and bank, thanks to the Internet, television and telephones. Some can work just as easily at home.

As communications technologies advance to create better virtual offices, more companies are willing to give telecommuting a chance. It's a slow revolution, however, despite high gasoline prices.

About 25 percent of U.S. workers have jobs they could perform by telecommuting. Only 2 percent do so full time, however. Another 9 percent work away from the office part time — one or two days a week or each month
