A freelancer sucess story

Karyn Martin was
cautious about launching her freelance career online, but she soon
got results:

"I remember the days when I dreamed of being a freelancer," she says.
"The word seemed magical to me somehow. Romantic, almost. Now, after
having actually been a freelancer for a while, the scales have been
lifted from my eyes and I have seen the light. You pay for being able
to manipulate your time. You pay by working more, working harder, and
- hopefully - working smarter. But what you get in return is
priceless. Now I can call the shots about when I work, for whom I
work, and how much I make."

One day, Karyn decided she was no longer willing to commute in
smog-laden traffic to sit in a cubicle for eight hours, come home,
eat, sleep, wake up, and then do it all over again. Going through the
same routine, day after day, week after week , only to wake up one day
old and tired - wondering how life might have been if she'd had the
guts to go it alone.

So she decided to become a freelancer - but how would she find work? She
had spent endless hours surfing the 'net, signing up with one
freelance site after another. Yet there was an incredible amount of
competition. She never seemed to win any bids, and was adamant about
not lowering her hourly rate.

"Then I discovered Freelance Work Exchange," she says. "I had heard
"don't pay to work!" repeatedly, and I was too poor to risk getting
scammed, but I took a chance one day when I was flush and sent twenty
bucks to gain access to the Freelance Work Exchange Professional
Edition.

"Since then, I've edited a sales letter, a follow-up letter, an
11-page Web site, and a brochure. I'm 'on call' to do pinch-hit
proofreading for a medical newsletter editor in Florida while he's on
vacation, sick, etc. And I've landed a gig editing a new Canadian
magazine coming out this fall. All this from taking a $20 chance on
Freelance Work Exchange."

Of course, it helped to send prospects a few previous work samples
she'd had the presence of mind to scan and save on disk. Also, since
she has been 'in the business' for more than five years, she has a
fairly good résumé with some experience to back up the claims, along
with a strong list of references.

"For every one of you out there feeling a little discouraged, and
especially for those of you on the verge of throwing in the towel, I'm
here to tell you this. There may not be a Santa Claus, but there is a
place to find work without paying some ridiculous "transaction fee" or
never knowing whether or not the projects are 'fresh' - and even the
name is easy to remember - Freelance Work Exchange."

British want to work from home

Changing attitudes, improved house values and new technology could make the daily commute to an office a thing of the past for many British workers, but what effect is this having on the UK housing market?

A YouGov survey has found that 37% of men and 34% of women said they would give up part of their next pay rise if they could work from home, with 1% of men claiming that they would be prepared to drop £10,000 a year to free themselves from the tyranny of having to go into an office.

Congressman Hoyer pushes telecommuting

With the average cost of a gallon of gas now over $3.00, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) visited the Bowie State University Telework Center on Monday to meet with federal and private teleworkers from Maryland.

"One of my proudest achievements in Congress has been leading the charge to make telecommuting the official policy of the federal government," Hoyer said. "As we enter an era in which energy conservation will be more important than at any other time in our nation's history, teleworking is central to a smart energy independence program."

A telecommuting success story

When Daniel Barnette heads to his job as a computational scientist for Sandia National Laboratories each morning, he enjoys an enviably short commute. After breakfast, he walks out of his kitchen, down a hall covered in framed family portraits and takes a left.

Just like that, he's at work.

"I tell people, 'I've got to go to work now,' and I just walk in there," Barnette says of his home office.

Barnette "telecommutes" three or four days each week, performing his job remotely from a spare bedroom/office in his home.

According to Kate Rivera, the manager of staffing, recruiting and relocation at Sandia, approximately 175 of the company's 8,500 employees have formal telecommuting contracts.

Telecommuting in rural areas

High gas prices, traffic tie-ups, expensive housing - who needs it? Most Americans, if they want a good paying job.

But an increasing number of people are opting out by telecommuting, giving them access to companies in high-paycheck areas while at the same time being able to live in areas with more reasonably priced real estate.

"You can now earn a New York salary and live in a much less expensive place," says Chris Miller, executive director of the Creative Coast Initiative, a non-profit organization that promotes the advantages of Savannah, Georgia, which attracts many telecommuters with Atlanta-based companies.Read More

Telecommuting from Mexico or anywhere in the world

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, Mexico — Nicole and John Gordon spent their 20s in San Francisco, riding the best years of the technology boom. But with two kids, Nicole Gordon started asking herself, "What do you do after San Francisco?"
The answer, it turned out, in the hills of Guanajuato state, was this colonial Mexican town with high-speed Internet, cheap day care, decent restaurants and plenty of large, open homes for rent.
"There's no reason we couldn't stay here," said John Gordon, a software developer who's trying out the Mexican life with his young family for about six months.
Gordon, whose mother retired to San Miguel, considers himself at the forefront of a demographic trend: high-tech professionals who can work anywhere in the world.

Higher gas prices equals more telecommuters

Every time Laurie Shannon makes the 160-mile round- trip drive between her home in Belchertown, Mass., and her office in suburban Boston, she uses five gallons of gas and shells out $5.10 in tolls. With prices at the pump skyrocketing, she has devised a partial solution: fewer commutes.
"If there's nothing that requires face-to-face meetings, and if I have everything I need with me, I can work at home three days a week," says Ms. Shannon, a research psychologist at WFD Consulting in Newton, Mass. With a laugh she adds, "My dogs like it, too."

Shannon is in the vanguard of a quietly growing band of Americans turning to telecommuting to reduce gas costs. As they work at home, typically a day or two a week, they are spurring a shift that could eventually turn the United States into what workplace analyst John Challenger calls a "telecommuter nation."
