Gas price rising more telecomuting opportunities

CHICAGO, IL, United States (UPI) -- Rapidly escalating gasoline prices may speed the United States` transformation into a telecommuting nation, analysts say.

The price of gasoline Friday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, a rough proxy for its wholesale cost, topped $2.25 per gallon.

'The average worker commutes 16 miles each way to work every day,' said John Gray of Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. 'That adds up to more than 8,000 miles per year going to and from work.

'Companies will be forced to help ease the financial burden of higher gas prices or risk losing their workers to companies located closer to their homes or companies that offer primarily telecommuting.'

A 2005 survey by Connecticut-based Business & Legal Reports asked employers what they were doing to help employees deal with high gas prices. Only 1 percent of the 499 respondents said their companies were allowing more telecommuting. And 6 percent encouraged workers to carpool or use public transportation.

The overwhelming majority of employers, however, took a hands-off approach, with 86 percent saying that their companies did nothing to help their workers.

Downsides of telecommuting

There have been hundreds of articles written on the benefits of telecommuting, but very few on the disadvantages. Although a lot of people can point to the benefits of happier employees and lower costs nothing is perfect and telecommuting does have some serious downsides to the future of a business.

In my opinion, the biggest negative to telecommuting is the loss of the informal exchange of ideas between staff. When most companies are promoting a team effort, telecommuting places employees in situations where they must often fend for themselves. When telecommuting is implemented requests for assistance or new ideas and concepts are generally circulated in a formal manner, be it email or an Intranet web site message boards. No longer can employee sit down with a colleague or walk into the boss’s office and say, “what do you think of this idea?” This results in a lack of fertilization of new ideas and concepts. Over the years, I have seen hundreds of ideas and concepts hammered out over lunchroom tables and next to coffee machines. I can actually recall a very successful new business venture that started as a joke.

Secondarily is the individual growth of an employee. The informal mentoring that occurs, or should be occurring, in every company. Employees grow within an organization by learning from their supervisors and colleagues. This education is primarily informal and individuals, in many cases, learn by osmosis, by filling in and by assisting other members of staff. Most, if not all of this education is lost in a telecommuting environment. Coupled with the informal mentoring is the constant informal reinforcement of “great job”, “well done”, usually lost in the telecommuting environment.

The third area that I believe is a negative in a telecommuting environment is in detail work. If you are in a business situation where large proposals are being written or other substantial documentation is being produced, detail changes do not happen because of the lack of convenience to implement them. Because changes generally require formal communication, it becomes easier to accept what has been produced rather than asking someone to add or delete a word or change a format, especially if the change is not truly critical.

The forth is very dependent on the individual involved. Everyone needs a break, needs to get away from their work. Depending on ones mental resolve, some people need to “leave” work in order to get a break and in this case I mean physically leave work. If work that should be done is sitting in one’s home office or worse yet on the dining room table can the individual, on Friday at 5:00 pm, stop what they are doing and leave it to complete until Monday at 8:00 am. Some people can, others cannot. The employees that cannot are not getting that needed break. Some employers may believe that they get more hours of work out of telecommuting staff. The question is, are those hours productive?

Implementing a successful telecommuting strategy for your business is much more than installing a computer and phone line in someone’s home.

Security risks of telecommuting

Popularity of laptops and wireless networks are making telecommuting a pretty standard business practice these days. With all this remote access going on, the accessibility of corporate files off company premises become worrisome, it goes without saying that more companies are increasing their security perimeter to include the home computers of their employees.

A recent study found that in 2005, nearly 9 million people worked from home for three or more days a month. A full 25 percent of those people worked from home all the time. Early predictions are for even higher figures in 2006.

That's a lot of opportunities for hackers to seize computer secrets, especially given the inherently lower level of security found in most home computer systems.

Interviewing tips for a Telecommuting Job

Telecommuters are individuals who spend part, if not all, of their working hours at another location other than the workplace. For most people it is their home. In order to do this one must have a variety of "telecommunication technologies" such as a telephone, Internet, various computer programs and a fax machine at one's disposal.

Telecommuters need to have excellent skills when it comes to the laborious task of telephone interviews. The first most important phone interview tip is to always be prepared in case you are contacted for an interview, no matter what time of day it is. Many employers do not give telecommuters the heads up in advance about when they will be calling to speak with them.

Another important phone interview tip is to get ready for your interview in much the same way you would for a regular "in person" interview. Anticipate what questions you might be asked and have appropriate answers in your mind (or written on paper) before the interview even begins. Be ready and willing to answer questions about your educational background, work experience and skills. Also be prepared to tell the prospective recruiter or employer what you could do for him or her.

Prepare a list of questions you wish to ask the interviewer. Always ask at least a few questions as it shows that you are paying attention and that you are very interested in the position in question. Keep in mind that phone interviews are sometimes more difficult to gage because you have to rely completely on the spoken word. Neither the interview nor interviewee is able to pick up on body language or any nuances of behavior but instead must go by the words and questions they are presented with and the pitch and intonation of words. Tread carefully and maintain a balanced, professional and courteous tone of voice at all times.

It is essential in a phone interview for a telecommuter to speak as a person in the know. Don't indulge in too many "ums", "okays", "I don't knows" or "uhs" as these words don't carry with them an air of knowledge or confidence. Always have your resume nearby so you can consult it during your phone interview. After all the interviewer is looking at your resume, why shouldn't you be as well?

Other important tips include turning your call-waiting feature off so there are no interruptions; making sure you are alone in the room and there is no noise anywhere nearby to disturb the interview and having a notepad and paper handy to jot down any relevant information that you glean from the interview.

SonicWall claims a survey it commissioned establishes that 1 in 10 telecommuters work with no clothes on (some might argue it really means that 1 in 10 telecommuters like messing with survey takers):
While about 39% of respondents of both sexes said they wear sweats while working from home, 12% of males and 7% of females wear nothing at all. In matters of cleanliness, the difference between the sexes was more pointed: 44% of women surveyed said they showered on work-at-home days, as opposed to men, who were slightly more likely to shave (33%) than wash (30%).

Work at home scam stuffing envelopes job

If you are looking to work from home, you may be tempted by those ads telling you about jobs stuffing envelopes that will make you loads of money. However, those ads say little about jobs stuffing envelopes and more about opportunities. There is a difference between a job and an opportunity, and jobs stuffing envelopes really are not opportunities at all.

If you are looking to work from home there are a lot of legitimate opportunities. You can find them all over. However, any ad promising your jobs stuffing envelopes are really telling you that you will have the opportunity to make money. More often than not, this “opportunity” comes from a thinly veiled scam. The ad for jobs stuffing envelopes will have you send money to a P.O. Box in exchange for a Starter Kit. The kit is usually a description of how to place an ad for jobs stuffing envelopes to get more naïve people to send you money.

Why are jobs stuffing envelopes a scam? First of all, there are no companies that will pay a person money to stuff envelopes when machinery is so advanced it can do it for much cheaper. You would never be able to keep up with the machinery that stuffs the envelopes for less than 50 cents each.

Second, you should never have to send in money to find out more information about jobs stuffing envelopes. This “good faith” payment has nothing to do with “good faith” on the company’s part. It is a way for the company offering jobs stuffing envelopes to take your money. A legitimate business will let you know what they do and how they do it up front. Another version of the “good faith” payment with jobs stuffing envelopes is a processing fee.

Another form of the jobs stuffing envelopes scam is actually a pyramid scheme. You do stuff envelopes, but they are ads that tell others about the opportunity of jobs stuffing envelopes. You get paid when the person sends you the money. This is illegal, and you do not want to get involved in this type of scam.

The advertisement for jobs stuffing envelopes may also offer you free stamps and envelopes for your “processing fee.” You actually will get the stamps and free envelopes, on the self-addressed stamped envelopes from people wondering about jobs stuffing envelopes. Are you getting the idea of the cycle here? Actually very few people today will bother with the SASE, as more jobs are posting free information on the internet and via hotlines. Your jobs stuffing envelopes will probably not reap the kind of return you think.

A laptop  printer, FTP, DSL or cable modem is all that I need to perform my job, and these are things that I already possess in my home office, and will use.


Telecommuting programs have been working for companies like Jetblue, Virgin Atlantic, AAA, Cigna, Carnival Cruise Line, etc, and can definitely work for this company.

I would like to telecommute two days a week starting 10/15/  for a period of at least six months. After six months, once this is working out, I would like to telecommute three days a week, with the possibility of doing this full time after another review of my performance.

I do have child care needs that will be met by a part time babysitter.

How to write a telecommuting proposal

Are you sick and tired of dragging your sick child to daycare because you can't afford to take another day off from work? Maybe you just want to skip the long, stressful commute to work or want to be able to work on your own time around your family's schedule.

Whatever your job situation may be, you’ve probably wished that your job offered flexible work schedules or the option of telecommuting. Well, if you have a 9-5 job that can be converted to a telecommuting job, you can make a case for telecommuting by creating a verbal and written proposal.

Despite the fact that your reason for wanting to telecommute might be personal, never let this be known to your employer. In your written proposal you must focus on the benefits that telecommuting would offer your employer.

Your telecommuting proposal should:

* State what potential advantages telecommuting would have on the company

* State what schedule you would like (i.e., telecommute 1-3 days weekly)

* Describe your alternative work site

* Explain how you would communicate with your supervisor, and co-workers

* Explain how you would be more productive as a telecommuter

* List what equipment you would need from your employer, and what equipment you already own

* Let your employer know how your dependent(s) (if any) need for care would be met

* Address any concerns that your employer might have

* Schedule to meet with your employer after performing your proposed arrangement to review your performance and to discuss whether this telecommuting arrangement is working or not.

Work at home taking calls

Nicole St. Julien-Thomas is hard at work with her full-time job at home.

"I take calls for stranded motorists who are members of AAA," she says.

St. Julien-Thomas found the job through WillowCSN, a company which provides virtual call center services. That means she takes customer calls at her own home using her own phone and computer.

Angie Selden is WillowCSN's CEO.

"The Willow home agent model is a great idea for people who are looking for flexibility and the ability to earn money during the times of the day that fit into their personal schedule," says Selden.

That's because St. Julien-Thomas and other agents work when they want to.

"I think working from home is like a dream job for a lot of people," says St. Julien-Thomas. "It's just perfect. You set your own hours, you're free to come and go."

Michele Mulqueeney works from home, too. She works for the IRS, dealing with tax form requests.

She was hired by a company that specializes in jobs for people with disabilities. Mulqueeney has multiple sclerosis and found it difficult to work outside the home.

"I couldn't drive anymore," she says. "And just getting up, getting showered and dressed, I would be exhausted."

Mulqueeney works part-time, putting in about 28 hours a week. "It really is wonderful, it's relieved me financially," she says.

Applicants are screened and training is provided by the company. All you need is a computer with a broadband connection, a telephone and a friendly voice.

Now keep in mind, benefits are not included in these types of jobs, but the flexibility allows for more freedom, especially if you're juggling work and freedom.

Disabled People can work at home

After Tom Courter suffered a debilitating illness that forced him to change his profession and slow his lifestyle, he's been able to use technology to help him forge a new career.

Courter, who lives south of Midland, spent three weeks in the hospital and underwent months of treatment after flesh-eating bacteria disease created a huge wound that reached from his waistline two-thirds of the way to his knee. Once a sales manager for a company that designs and sells ambulances and rescue vehicles, he no longer can climb ladders and get to the tops of the trucks to show prospective buyers how they're made. So he put his college accounting studies to work, took a self-study course and became Courter Accounting Services.

Work at home mom has too many visitors

Dear Amy: I am a married mom of a 7-year-old daughter, "Ana." I work at home doing medical transcription. I get paid by the hour.

Several of Ana's neighborhood friends like to play here because we have cool video games, a swimming pool, etc.

I want Ana to have friends because she is an only child. However, sometimes (especially last summer) I feel that these kids' stay-at-home moms think I am a free day-care center over here, even though they all know I work. One kid last summer would come over for several hours a day every day. I know it's my fault and I did put a stop to it, but his mom pretty much quit speaking to me, which is fine.

Home office tax deductions

Whether you are self-employed or an employee, if you use a portion of your home for business, you might be able to deduct the associated costs.

Telecommuting is a growing trend

Imagine being on a Hawaii vacation and stepping onto the hotel balcony to watch the sun rise over the Pacific.
Then the phone rings. It's a co-worker from the mainland. Ready for the conference call?
It happened to Darlene Frudakis, president of PetAg Inc., a Hampshire, Ill.-based pet food maker. Even more surprising was Frudakis' reaction.

Home Shoring is growing

The use of independent contractors to handle customer service calls from their homes is soaring as companies look to cut costs — and more employees seek jobs that allow them to work remotely.
The number of home-based agents will nearly triple over the next few years, says research group IDC, as major employers and independent call-center providers step up their hiring of contractors to do telephone work from home — dubbed homesourcing.

The trend is being driven by cost-cutting needs as well as macroeconomic shifts.
