Telecommuting is still not main stream

Computers, BlackBerries and personal digital assistants are making it easier for some companies to be flexible with schedules, allowing employees to work from home when necessary.

While few companies in Colorado Springs allow full-time telecommuting, many expect the practice to grow in popularity as gas prices near $3 a gallon – and show no signs of falling in the face of unrest in Iran and Venezuela, and required seasonal changes at the nation’s refineries.

“It costs more than just a dollar or two to come to work anymore,” said David Kast, a chief executive officer at Stockman, Cast Ryan & Co. “So we do allow people to work from home. We have one employee who works from home during our busy season – she comes into the office maybe once a week.”

Building inspectors work at home

Sarasota County Government has enacted a pilot plan for building inspectors that will save on fuel and hopefully lead to more time efficiency.

A small number of building inspectors can now begin their days at home rather than reporting to a central office. With the use of laptops, printers and cell phones, inspectors can receive assignments and head straight to the job site, according to a county press release.

Sarasota County government is starting the program on a small scale so they can work out any unforeseen problems but they hope to implement the program so all inspectors can start their workdays at home. The county estimates the program will allow inspectors to complete 100 additional inspections per day.

Advanced technology allows workers to telecommute

More than a dozen employees of Kissimmee Utility Authority are working from home, most on a part-time basis, including employees in the utility's customer service and information technology departments. Advanced technology allows employees full access to the utility from home. Managers supervising the employees can use the same technology to monitor and guide these employees remotely.

"The work-from-home program allows KUA to respond more quickly to peaks in customer service requests," said Mike Geraghty, the utility's vice president of customer service and marketing. "When our customer phone traffic picks up, we can instantly route calls to employees at home, rather than waiting for them to drive to work."

There were almost 14 million Americans telecommuting at least part time in 2004, and an additional 7 million running businesses from home, according to the most recent data available from the U.S. Labor Department.

"This pilot project has other benefits as well, including moving people off the roads and back into their homes where they can ably carry out their responsibilities for our customers," said Jeffery Gray, vice president of information technology. "At the same time they are reducing traffic congestion and able to spend more time with their families."
