Washington DC tops for Telecommuting

Move over New York City. Say good-bye San Francisco. Of all the tech-savvy urban centers across the United States, Washington, D.C has been named the “Best City for Teleworking” in America, according to a new study released today by research firm Sperling’s BestPlaces and Intel Corporation. The phenomenon of telework has grown rapidly in recent years thanks to the proliferation of laptop computers and wireless tools and technologies. Among these is Intel (News - Alert) Centrino Mobile Technology and its network of more than 19,000 hotspots in the U.S. that are part of Intel’s Wireless Verification Program.

Work at home mom has too many visitors

Dear Amy: I am a married mom of a 7-year-old daughter, "Ana." I work at home doing medical transcription. I get paid by the hour.

Several of Ana's neighborhood friends like to play here because we have cool video games, a swimming pool, etc.

I want Ana to have friends because she is an only child. However, sometimes (especially last summer) I feel that these kids' stay-at-home moms think I am a free day-care center over here, even though they all know I work. One kid last summer would come over for several hours a day every day. I know it's my fault and I did put a stop to it, but his mom pretty much quit speaking to me, which is fine.

Work at home is a growing trend

You've probably heard of outsourcing, where companies hire people in other countries to handle customer service calls for everything from ordering out of a catalog to computer help. Now a new trend called "homeshoring" is keeping these traditionally offshore jobs here in the US.

Rebecca Dooley doesn't look like your typical customer care agent. But that's exactly what she is. Rebecca's part of a growing employment trend called homeshoring. If you happen to have a customer question for Office Depot, 1-800-FLOWERS, or J. Crew, you just might find yourself talking to someone in her shoes. Continue reading

Home office tax deductions

Whether you are self-employed or an employee, if you use a portion of your home for business, you might be able to deduct the associated costs.

A home-office deduction is generally easier for self-employed individuals to claim. But even then, the Internal Revenue Service has certain requirements a taxpayer must meet.

General requirements

First, your home-office area must be used regularly and exclusively for your business needs. You can't set up a computer in your den, sporadically type invoices and claim that room as your home office. Continue reading

Work at home data entry jobs reviews

Work from home businesses have been under the microscope of late and in general Data Entry on-line jobs also categorized as Type from Home jobs. Is Data Entry programs legitimate? Can you make a decent living from doing this type of on-line work? Are there any decent programs that can be recommended?

With all the questions asked, one website looking out for the consumers purchased over 50 Data Entry on-line programs. The website We Do The Shopping For You, or www.WDTS4U.com did an in depth research on which Data Entry programs actually did well and which ones were scams.

WDTS4U reported about 75% of all the programs they researched did not work as advertised and were a waste of money and almost never got their money back after they paid for the program. WDTS4U rated the programs from 1 star to 5 stars, of course 5 stars being the best. The Data Entry Programs they gave 5 stars to are not get rich quick schemes but will take some effort on the users part. Don't expect to retire tomorrow is what they are saying but you can make a decent living if you spend the time.

WDTS4U is still doing research as they go along with these programs and are keeping in touch with the consumers who are also trying these programs to get their input on them. They are even offering a 100% guarantee on programs that are already offering this same guarantee,so the consumer feels comfortable if they desire to try any of these 5 star programs. If you are interested in this type of program we suggest you take a look at WDTS4U.com March 2006 Review on Data Entry Programs.

Telecommuting is a growing trend

Imagine being on a Hawaii vacation and stepping onto the hotel balcony to watch the sun rise over the Pacific.
Then the phone rings. It's a co-worker from the mainland. Ready for the conference call?
It happened to Darlene Frudakis, president of PetAg Inc., a Hampshire, Ill.-based pet food maker. Even more surprising was Frudakis' reaction.
"It was just a fabulous feeling," said Frudakis, a full-time telecommuter who is very comfortable blurring the line between work and play. She relishes the "freedom and creativity ... to think outside the box" that comes with being physically detached from her company's headquarters - whether that is at home in Novato, Calif., or on vacation - and says that makes her more productive.

Telecommuting in Pittsburgh

More than 5 percent of tech firm Ariba Inc.'s 1,550 employees telecommute, allowing them to be closer to the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based firm's global clientele, said Vice President of Human Resources Matthew Zack.

"It's much more economical for us to have folks located in the region [where customers are,]" Mr. Zack said, adding that the firm, which has offices Downtown, pays for Internet connectivity and mobile phones

Home Shoring is growing

The use of independent contractors to handle customer service calls from their homes is soaring as companies look to cut costs — and more employees seek jobs that allow them to work remotely.
The number of home-based agents will nearly triple over the next few years, says research group IDC, as major employers and independent call-center providers step up their hiring of contractors to do telephone work from home — dubbed homesourcing.

The trend is being driven by cost-cutting needs as well as macroeconomic shifts.

Cyberagents The new call center rep

Kathleen Hughes moved from Florida to rural Minnesota last year. She cringed when she had to get in the car in snowy weather and make a 40-mile drive to her job in Grand Rapids, Minn.

The commute got old very quickly.

"That's what really pushed me over the edge to work at home," she said.

Working from home isn't new, but Hughes has tapped into a more recent adaptation: the virtual call center. Continue reading

Telecommuting tips going from suits to sweats

As employees and businesses increasingly recognize the benefits of telecommuting, the number of professionals working remotely has grown dramatically. By many indications, the practice seems here to stay.

A recent report by technology research firm Gartner, Inc. revealed the number of employees worldwide who work from home at least one day a month reached 82.5 million by the end of 2005, double the figure from 2000. Gartner predicts this number will grow to more than 100 million by 2008 as technology continues to advance at a steady clip. Continue reading

Telecommuting at Jet Blue Remote Jobs

When you call to make a flight reservation with JetBlue Airlines, you just might be talking to someone in their bunny slippers.

No, they're not getting carried away with casual Friday. Eighty percent of JetBlue's reservation agents work from home. And as the airline just passed its six-year anniversary of allowing its agents to telecommute, the company reports that the move has not only saved them money and expensive office space... it's also increased productivity.

And, according to JetBlue, workers there say they like skipping the commute in to the office, the flexibility of being at home... and the option of working in their pajamas.

See what current remote opps are available at JetBlue
