AMES, Iowa (AP) - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton says the government should create better policies to help working mothers.
The presidential candidate made the comments tonight at Iowa State University, where about 1,500 people heard her speech.
She says improving family policies starts with extending the Family and Medical Leave Act. It allows employees at businesses with more than 50 workers to have unpaid leave for family emergencies. Clinton wants to drop that threshold to 25 employees.
The New York senator says she also wants states to experiment with paid leave, especially for workers who aren't in jobs that provide paid time off.
She says working mothers need more time off to recover from childbirth, and she wants businesses to allow their workers to spend more time at home on flextime schedules and through telecommuting.
